important steps to provide for your pet:
What will happen to your pet if you do not plan for the future? Sadly, in the confusion that accompanies your sudden illness, incapacity, hospitalization or death, your beloved companion could be overlooked or forgotten, or even taken to an animal shelter to be euthanized. It doesn't have to be that way.
sticker on your door
Place a sticker on your home's front door or window to inform firefighters, police or emergency medical technicians that you have pet(s) inside. Include the type of pet (cat, dog, bird, etc.), how many, and where the pet(s) can be taken in case of emergency.
let a neighbor know Make certain that at least one of your neighbors knows what you want to do about your pet(s) if something happens to you or you're unable to get home.
designate an "emergency" caretaker Designate a friend or relative who's willing to become your pet's interim caretaker in your absence (or until the pet(s) can be transported to or picked up by the organization or person who has agreed to care for them long-term). Be sure this caretaker has access to your home (a key to your house or apartment), knows what type and number of pets you have and their names, and knows your veterinarian's name, address and phone number.
wallet identification card Carry a wallet-sized card with you that lists your pets by type and name, where they are and who should care for them (including name, address and phone number) in case of an emergency. (CLICK HERE to print a wallet alert card.)
your will Add an amendment (a "codicil") to your will that specifies the arrangements you've made for your pet's comfort and care, and give a copy to your pet's designated caretaker. For further information, including sample will provisions, Wills & Bequests.
records & information Gather all your pet's important papers together, and send copies to your pet's designated caretaker. Include your pet's type, breed, sex, birth date, description, license number, photograph, certificates of registration and pedigree if any, medical history and record of vaccinations. Add any special instructions such as diet, favorite treats and toys.

A Gift Of Life - Even After You Are Gone
Have you ever wondered who will care for your pets after you are gone? The PetPromise Lifetime Care Program will help ensure a safe and loving future environment for your pets.
When you name PetPromise as a beneficiary of your estate, and enroll your pets in the Lifetime Care Program, PetPromise will ensure that your pets are safe and placed in loving permanent homes, in the comfort of long-term foster care, or safe in our sanctuary for the rest of their natural lives. (If you have more than six animal family members, or if you have pets other than dogs and cats, please call us to see if special arrangements can be made.)
By enrolling in the PetPromise Lifetime Care Program, you will receive peace of mind knowing that your beloved companions will continue to receive tender loving care and any medical care they need. We will also do our best to find them a new home where they will be as cherished as they were in your care. Our ultimate goal is to find your pets a new permanent home that closely matches the kind of life to which they are accustomed. We do this through our stringent adoption policies (required veterinarian and personal references, home visits with the potential adopter, etc.) Each pet is treated and loved as if it were our own.
enrolling your pet
While PetPromise asks that you provide a $2,500 minimum bequest per pet enrolled in the Lifetime Care Program, we understand that some people do not have the resources to provide large endowments or trusts for their animals while others have been generously blessed and are able to leave enough in their will for their own animals with some left over to cover the costs of those less fortunate. For this reason, there is no "set amount" required to enroll a pet in the PetPromise Lifetime Care Program. We just ask that you leave what you can knowing that all funds will be used to care for your pets with any left over being used to help other pets in need.
step 1: designating funds for the care of your pets
Simply make a gift to PetPromise that will take effect after your lifetime (bequest in a will, a bank account, or a life insurance policy) by naming PetPromise as the beneficiary. Your lawyer will want to know the following information: PetPromise is a registered nonprofit corporation with IRS 501(c)3 status.
Spell out our entire name:
PetPromise, Inc.
Include our Tax idenification number:
31-1690791
Include PetPromise's address:
P.O. Box 21091
Columbus, OH 43221
614.738.2149
(NOTE: If you choose to leave property to PetPromise to benefit your pets, you should speak with your attorney or financial advisor to make sure there are funds available to care for your pets in the interim period between the sale of the property and realization of the funds.)
If you own life insurance that is no longer needed to protect your family members or business, all that you need to do is name PetPromise as beneficiary. This type of funding enables many persons with limited income to make sure their pets' needs are well taken care of.
step 2: designate emergency caregivers
A very important element in creating a solid plan is to designate two reliable family members, friends, or acquaintances to act as temporary caregivers. You should select people whom you feel you can count on to step in and provide the care and feeding that your pets need, beginning the day that you are no longer there for them. Whoever you appoint for this important task should be prepared to care for your pets for several days, and to notify us that it is time to activate your pets' Lifetime Care Plan. (Please designate two people in the event that one of them is unable to perform the duties involved.)
step 3: complete the PetPromise Lifetime Care Program Enrollement Form
In order to ensure that your pet(s) are enrolled in the PetPromise Lifetime Care Program, you will need to complete one PetPromise Lifetime Care Enrollment Form for each of the pets that you are enrolling and return the completed form(s) to PetPromise. (If you need to update your pet's ifnormation, please send all updates to PetPromise in writing so that we can be sure to include it in your file.)
If you would like an application to enroll your pets in the PetPromise Lifetime Care Program, e-mail your name, address, and telephone number along with the number and types of pets you wish to enroll to:
